Tongue Memorials
During the 1980s, Cowper & Ross performed the mammoth task of inspecting all the older gravestones in Sutherland. Their work resulted in Sutherland Monumental Inscriptions pre 1855, edited by A. S. Cowper and I. Ross, 1989 ISBN 0901061 33 6, © copyright The Scottish Genealogy Society.
In 2001 a family historian in New Zealand asked me to photograph her ancestors' memorial in Tongue. Since then, on my holiday visits, I have photographed and transcribed about seventy pre-1855 gravestones in the three burial grounds in Tongue Parish: St Andrew's Parish Church, Skerray Cemetery and Melness Cemetery. For the convenience of people who own the book, I use the C & R reference numbers by kind permission of The Scottish Genealogy Society,
Since 2002, a group of family historians based at Highland Hearts have been re-visiting the older burial grounds in Sutherland, and photographs and transcripts are already available for many stones throughout the county.
