Octosonar Manufacture

These Octosonar modules interface with Arduino and support up to 8 HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensors on the I2C bus plus one hardware interrupt pin. I’ve made over 200 of them in the past 5 years and it was time to make a new batch. I decided to see how my new Samsung S21FE phone would work as a video camera and make a video as I made a new batch. Clearly the camera is fine – it’s the operator that needs work. I also picked up Adobe Premiere Elements to trim the 100 minute process down to under 20 minutes to make it digestible. I’ll repeat this process with the next batch and swap this out with, hopefully, a shorter and snappier version with less of my hair and arms obscuring things.

This shows the full process, end to end

  • Cleaning the PCBs – from PCBWay
  • applying solder paste with a stencil from OSH Stencils
  • selecting components
  • applying components with the Human Pick and Place system
  • reflow the boards in The Golden Toaster Oven
  • Remembering how the test jig works
  • Testing on the test jig
  • Touching up a bad solder joint
  • labelling bags
  • filling bags
  • inventory control (off camera)
